GE Home & Business Solutions is committed to the communities in which we have operations. That commitment is demonstrated by GE’s $1 billion investment in our Appliances business, which will create more than 1,300 new U.S. jobs by 2014.
Beyond creating job opportunities in communities around the world, our people are also transforming how work is done. At our Intelligent Platforms business, our employees are developing the next generation of Internet- and cloud-based solutions, which will transform how businesses work in the future. We’re also transforming how we work by adopting lean manufacturing principles, which employ cross-functional teams of employees to increase the competitiveness of our operations and to identify and remove waste in our processes. Truly, our people are the reason why GE works.
Our people are passionate about the environment, and their commitment is demonstrated in real action to conserve resources and develop green solutions.
GE Appliances is the first full-line appliance manufacturer in the U.S. to adopt cyclopentane, a foam-blowing agent that significantly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the insulating process. Use of cyclopentane reduces a facility’s GHG emissions from the foam-blowing process by 99% compared with the agent it replaces. Additionally, GE’s 2011 agreement with the Appliance Recycling Centers of America, involving the Philadelphia-based ARCA Advanced Processing recycling center, has already reduced the landfill waste of appliances by approximately 318,000 pounds monthly.
As a winner of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® Sustained Excellence Award for seven consecutive years, GE Lighting is recognized as a leader in energy-saving technologies that can minimize the strain on the nation’s power grid.
We’re also committed to educating consumers about the true cost of energy and offering them the means to control costs. Through GE’s Brillion™ connected-home technology and energy-smart appliances, such as our GeoSpring™ water heater and new French-door refrigerator with bottom-freezer, we’re working to give consumers the tools to understand their home’s energy consumption before the bills arrive and empowering them to make informed decisions when it comes to energy use.
We’re making our own offices and facilities greener, too. Our employees’ passion for the environment and the Company’s green footprint led to recognized advances in reducing water consumption, eliminating packaging waste and improving other key measures of environmental performance.
GE Home & Business Solutions contributes to local and regional economic growth. For example, in Kentucky alone, where the GE Appliances headquarters is located, studies show that the GE Company directly and indirectly contributes $1.6 billion to the state. This means $1 out of every $103 in the Kentucky economy is supported, in part, by GE’s Appliances, Lighting and Aviation sites throughout the state. In addition, the studies found that GE helps support more than 12,000 jobs in Kentucky, with nearly 5,000 direct employees, and that for every GE job, an additional 1.5 jobs are supported through a combination of employee spending and the Company’s vendor purchases.*
Our impact on the economy is also seen in our commitment to revitalize manufacturing in the U.S. At GE Home & Business Solutions factories across the country, we’re hiring engineers, technicians, hourly workers and Lean manufacturing specialists. These employees are developing the next generation of lower-cost, higher-quality appliances, lighting, and software and hardware products.
