The GE Foundation

GE Foundation, the philanthropic organization of General Electric Company, works to solve some of the world’s most difficult problems. In coordination with its partners, GE Foundation supports U.S. and international education, developing health globally, the environment, public policy, human rights, disaster relief and community success around the globe.

GE Foundation also supports GE employee and retiree giving and involvement in GE communities through employee programs such as the GE Foundation Matching Gifts Program.

GE Foundation Priorities

Developing Futures™ in Education

Through the Developing Futures in Education program, GE Foundation has committed nearly $200 million to seven U.S. school districts to improve student achievement through a rigorous math and science curriculum, professional development opportunities for teachers and management capacity improvement. Here are the current GE Foundation grants to U.S. school districts:

• Atlanta, Georgia — $22 million for 50,631 students, 3400 teachers, and 104 schools
• Cincinnati, Ohio — $20 million for 35,000 students, 2,600 teachers, and 62 schools
• Erie, Pennsylvania — $15 million for 12,637 students, 850 teachers, and 21 schools
• Louisville, Kentucky — 35$ million over five years for 97,000 students, 5,000 teachers, and 155 schools
• New York City, New York — $18.9 million over five years for 1,1m students, 79,000 teachers, and 1450+ schools
• Stamford, Connecticut — $ 25 million over five years for 15,000 students, 1,400 teachers, and 20 schools

Developing Health™

GE Foundation launched Developing Health, a three-year $50 million program providing grant funding and GE employee volunteer support to non-profit health centers across the United States. This program works to increase access to primary care for underserved populations in targeted communities.

Developing Health Globally™

GE Foundation launched the Developing Health Globally program, which aims to improve healthcare delivery for some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. Support is provided to upgrade the capabilities of rural district hospitals and health centers. Developing Health is currently serving the needs of these areas:

Employee Programs

• Total gifts in 2010 reached $38 million.
• United Way — GE employees and retirees support more than 200 United Way agencies throughout the United States. In 2010, total giving amounted to $27.9 million: $18.6 million from employees and $9.3 million from GE Foundation.
• GE STAR Awards — The GE Foundation’s GE STAR Awards provide recognition and financial support for first-year college to children of GE employees and retirees around the world for their outstanding achievements.. In 2011, 275 students received GE STAR Awards.

Disaster Relief

When disasters strike, the GE family commits resources and employee support to assist affected communities. GE Foundation commits resources in grants to relief organizations and through the GE Foundation Matching Gifts Program. In addition, GE Volunteers work through networks at the disaster sites to organize local support and align employees in the region. Our key partners include GE employees, International Red Cross, UNICEF, CARE, International Rescue Committee and International Medical Corps. Here are some recent examples of GE Foundation disaster relief efforts:

Japan Earthquake and Tsunami – March 2011

The GE Foundation pledged $10 million in cash, equipment and services toward relief. Additionally, GE employees from 41 countries pledged more than $1 million in cash to disaster relief organizations associated with the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. With the GE Foundation Matching Gifts, the total surpassed $2 million.

Pakistan Flooding – July 2010

The GE Foundation awarded $1.25 million in total to relief organizations. $250,000 was given to the International Rescue Committee and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent in support of immediate relief efforts. The additional $1 million was awarded to the World Food Programme to provide much needed food relief amidst looming concerns over food shortages in the region.

Chile Earthquake – February 2010

GE announced a $2 million commitment to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need. As part of this commitment, $1.25 million went directly to support the emergency response needs in Chile; the remainder was contributed to the American Red Cross Disaster Response Fund, which provides assistance in the critical first hours and days before and after a disaster strikes.

International Programs

GE Foundation funds initiatives that reduce disparity, improve the quality of and access to education and increase skills-building to ensure sustainable infrastructure development. Current initiatives include girls’ education programs throughout Africa, an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Academy in China and a Medical Best Practice Exchange program in Ghana.

Public Policy

GE Foundation funds initiatives that enhance public policy dialogue. Its support in this area encourages constructive dialogue with key stakeholders. This involvement helps GE Foundation identify and learn about the next generation of policy issues in order to work toward effective solutions to significant policy dilemmas.
